Role Overview

Genus PLC has an exciting opportunity! We are looking for a Gene Editing Research Scientist - Livestock Disease to support genetic improvement in livestock. The position is located in our DeForest office. The scientist will work alongside a talented team of scientists under the supervision of the Director of Gene Editing to better understand mechanisms of disease resistance in livestock. The Scientist has primary accountability for developing novel approaches to identify pathogen/host response pathways and gene candidates for trait improvement in pigs and cows. Additionally, the Scientist would be expected to collaborate with internal and external experts necessary to support research objectives and be able to work, teach, and grow with a Genus team that is collaborative, enthusiastic, and engaging.

 

The successful candidate can work in a culturally diverse, fast-paced environment and can work autonomously and collaboratively across functional teams with strong attention to detail and respect for quality assurance. The candidate will also be able to effectively communicate results and their impact on a systems level in a multidisciplinary environment.

You Will

  • Lead and manage high quality experiments critical for the livestock gene discovery pipeline initiative, adapting experimental strategies as required to achieve project goals and stay on schedule.
  • Build knowledge that advances our understanding of livestock disease using data generated internally, through literature, and/or strategic collaborations.
  • Collaborate with internal Research & Development (R&D) teams to evaluate candidate genes for mitigation to livestock disease in cell culture and/or in animals.
  • Interpret, summarize data and develop new experiments based on results, and share results across research organization.
  • Influence scientific team and internal audiences through consistent positive technical contributions and frequent strategic level input.
  • Provide technical training and guidance to team members, execute experiments as outlined by technical, project, or management leads and independently manage tasks within your area of expertise to complete experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Remain current on new technology by reviewing literature, participating in professional meetings and career development activities, and encouraging others to bring information into research activities. Review, develop, and integrate new technologies.
  • Cultivate and promote a strong safety culture while following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Position may require work responsibilities outside of normal business hours.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications: (required)

  • Advanced Degree (PhD) in Virology, Immunology, Veterinary Medicine, Molecular Genetics, or related field
  • Candidate must have a proven record of success in relevant field (publications and/or other achievements) and demonstrated experimental/wet-lab experience
  • Knowledge of host-pathogen interactions, immunology, gene networks, and genome-scale technologies, preferably in livestock
  • Experience developing and implementing short and long-term research projects

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer advanced degree with experience in pigs and/or bovine
  • Gene editing in livestock
  • Genome-scale library screens
