Role Overview

Genus PLC is seeking an experienced Development Engineer to be part of a team developing next generation technologies for cell sorting flow cytometers used to improve genetics for agricultural applications. This role involves capturing requirements for new concepts, product design, build, and testing of complex electromechanical systems. This role is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in physics, particularly in optics, electromechanics, thermal engineering, or related scientific areas, who is passionate about applying their expertise to solve real-world engineering problems. The Development Engineer will be responsible for writing technical requirements, creating test plans, analyzing data with statistical methods, and ensuring the advancement of technology to improve animal genetics. As part of the Research & Development (R&D) team, you will collaborate across disciplines with engineers, biologists, and other stakeholders to communicate technical results and recommend next steps.

You will contribute to the development of innovative solutions in a fast-paced, culturally diverse environment and be expected to deliver high-quality results with minimal supervision. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a focus on quality assurance will be essential in this role.

This position is based in our Windsor office, with hybrid work options available.

You Will

  • Develop detailed requirements addressing system and module level needs for the design and operation of flow cytometry systems.
  • Design test plans, including setting up experiments to de-risk new concepts and validate system performance and functionality.
  • Analyze experimental data using statistical methods to assess performance and optimize system functionality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers and biologists, to achieve technical milestones.
  • Manage internal and external resources, including working with vendors, to deliver project goals efficiently.
  • Coordinate testing, debugging, and troubleshooting processes for system performance and reliability.
  • Support the design, build, and testing of hardware and software components.
  • Assist in system validation, verification, and optimization to meet specific performance and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to patent applications related to innovations that advance the state of the art.
  • Uphold safety standards and follow all safety protocols in the laboratory and work environment.
  • Promote Genus’ core values, mission, and vision.
  • Perform other duties as required to support product development and operational success.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • University degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in development engineering; OR a Master’s degree with 1+ years of experience.
  • Experience should include working with scientific equipment, test planning, and data analysis in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Background in education or through work experience in optics, electromechanics, and thermal engineering, with a demonstrated ability to apply these principles to real-world engineering problems.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in writing technical requirements and developing experimental/test plans for complex systems.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience using statistical methods to analyze experimental data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with the design, testing, and troubleshooting of complex systems, ideally including optical or fluidic systems.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related program.
  • Advanced knowledge of flow cytometry and its application in agricultural and biological sciences.
  • Experience with developing systems for sperm sorting, sexing, or similar cell manipulation applications.
  • Familiarity with the design and integration of optical, electronic, and fluidic components for scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience working in agricultural biotechnology, particularly in applications related to animal genetics, reproductive biology, or similar fields.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and validation processes for scientific instruments and systems.
  • Experience working with statistical software and analysis tools such as MATLAB, R, or Python for data interpretation and reporting.
