Role Overview

PIC (Pig Improvement Company), a Genus company, has an exciting opportunity for a Swine Research Program Manager to join our team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about advancing sow knowledge through research. As the Research Program Manager, you will oversee the planning, execution, and management of applied research trials at a sow farm equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities.

 

The primary focus of this role is ensuring the success of PIC’s sow research program and the effective management of the Genetic Nucleus Crossbred (GNX) program. Strong collaboration and communication with PIC leadership teams (especially Product Validation and GNX teams), commercial partners, and production staff will be essential to ensure data quality, adherence to research protocols, and successful implementation of the GNX program.

You should be able to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and demonstrate a problem-solving mindset. This role requires both independent work and cross-functional collaboration across teams.

You Will

  • Manage PIC’s research program in this facility, with specific activities that include, but are not limited to:
    • Design, write and implement experimental protocols applicable to a commercial sow research site (e.g., gilt development, reproduction, gestation, lactation, etc.) with focus on management, nutrition and genetic trials among others.
    • Coordinate personnel assisting with research activities.
    • Ensure proper protocol execution by overseeing and conducting the following research activities:
      • Weighing of sows and piglets on test
      • Collect body condition measurements, such as caliper and ultrasound, on sows.
      • Tagging of animals
      • Any other research-related activity.
    • On-farm presence as needed to ensure protocol adoption, data collection and consolidation of data from multiple sources.
    • Summarize and present results of completed trials to other PIC teams and externally.
    • Collaborate with universities and other industry partners.
    • Participate in regular PIC Product Validation and Data analytic projects, meetings and team events.
  • Mange the execution of the GNX program, including but not limited to:
    • DNA tissue-samples collection
    • Incorporate new digital phenotyping technologies and trait measurements that support improved product performance
    • Assist with any other GNX program-related activity on site.
  • Proactively communicate with PIC research leads, production partners and other research specialist to ensure alignment of research goals, protocol execution, and data quality.
  • Demonstrate a high level of respect for both team members and animals.
  • Other tasks may include assisting with daily animal husbandry tasks.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%

Requirements

 

Basic Qualifications: (required)

  • Advanced degree in Animal or Meat Science, or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience conducting large animal research trials with multiple flows of data as well as data entry, data cleaning and summary.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; frequently bend, reach, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds as well as occasionally lift and pull up to 100 pounds with assistance; work in noisy environments requiring hearing protection. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applied statistics background, including experimental design and analyzing experimental data using mixed linear models, analysis of covariance, linear and multiple regressions.
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish
