Role Overview

PIC North America, a Genus Company, has an exciting opportunity. We are looking for a highly motivated Genetic Nucleus Crossbred Specialist to join our team. The position is hybrid in Marshalltown, IA. The person in this position will lead and conduct product development research in the PIC crossbred program. This program ensures our animals are able to thrive in a commercial setting. The successful candidate is detail-oriented, able to work both independently and collaboratively, and capable of troubleshooting issues related to data collection and equipment use, while maintaining accuracy and consistency.

 

The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $55,000 USD. The salary provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Genus considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

You Will

  • Label individual carcasses with sequence numbers at ‘line speed’ in the plant and record the sequence using an electronic recording device.
  • Obtain carcass information from the plant, organize it into an Excel format, and upload the information into the database.
  • Manage part-time staff members assisting with slaughter plant data collection.
  • Measure ham and loin pH values the day after harvest using an electronic recording device (training will be provided by PIC).
  • Take inventory of market hogs using a barcode scanner/RFID reader.
  • Enter farm data into the database.
  • Write monthly reports detailing activities.
  • Be responsible for understanding and adhering to all safety requirements and performing the job in compliance with those requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of on-hand supplies.
  • Obtain Genetic Nucleus Crossbred animal load information from the plant and record it into a standardized Excel spreadsheet.

Requirements

  • University degree, meat science, animal science or related field desired
  • A thorough understanding of swine production practices
  • Ability to work in a swine slaughter plant environment, including cold and/or warm temperatures
  • Flexibility in schedule to accommodate different days and times each week as required
  • Work requires continual attention to detail and ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems in an empowered, self-directed/managed work environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are required 
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaborate across teams and functional areas
  • Proficient with computer hardware and in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications
  • Ability to travel approximately 10%
