Role Overview

ABS Global, a Genus Company, is seeking an ABS Genetics and Genomics Intern to join our Beef Product Development Team in DeForest, Wisconsin (greater Madison area). This role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside a team of PhD geneticists advancing animal breeding, quantitative genetics, and genomics.

 

As a member of the team, the intern will contribute to the advancement of ABS's proprietary genetic program by supporting data-driven genetic strategy, program development, and custom index construction. The position provides an opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world industry challenges while gaining hands-on experience with the statistical methods, technologies, and decision-making processes used within a global genetics company.

 

The intern will assist with data mining, pipeline development, and quantitative analyses while exploring new models and approaches that support genetic evaluation and product development. Projects may include developing data pipelines for emerging traits of interest, updating model parameters, and investigating novel statistical methods. Specific project assignments will be tailored to the intern's skills, interests, and current business priorities, providing meaningful exposure to applied genetic improvement and innovation.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, proficiency with statistical tools, and a passion for using data to drive genetic improvement.

 

In this position you will work 40 hours per week, typically during normal office hours, but times could range on a day-to-day basis.

 

The hourly compensation range for this position is ($26 - $30) USD. The compensation provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Genus considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

You Will

  • Use statistical and analytic tools to perform data mining, develop data pipelines, and analyze large genetic, genomic, and performance datasets. 
  • Support the development and evaluation of new traits of interest by preparing data, conducting analyses, and interpreting results.
  • Investigate and evaluate new statistical models, methodologies, and approaches to support genetic evaluation and product development.
  • Update and refine model parameters used within ABS's proprietary genetic program.
  • Generate insights that inform genetic strategy, genetic program development, and genetic indices that deliver value to customers.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to project stakeholders and team members.
  • Uphold the Genus core values, mission, and vision.
  • Position may require working outside of normal business hours.
  • Perform other projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications: (required)

  • MS or PhD student in Animal Science, Plant Science, Quantitative Genetics, Statistics, Data Science, or related field, required
  • Strong analytical skills, familiarity with statistical packages (R, Python, etc.), and preferred experience with scripting or programming tools
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively work in cross-functional team environments and present technical findings to diverse audiences
  • Available for at least 12 weeks during the summer
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with genetic/genomic data, bioinformatics, estimating breeding values, and/or breeding index development.
  • Direct agricultural experience (plant or animal).
  • Strong interest in genetic data analysis, using data to develop on-farm genetic strategies, genetic program development, and custom genetic indices.
