Role Overview

The Systems Engineer will aid in engineering development of biotechnology instrumentation with internal engineering resources and external contractors and vendors. This role includes translating multi-disciplinary needs into detailed design specifications to guide design of the system. The Systems engineer will research and develop scientific instruments using skills in optics, electronics, mechanics, fluidics, algorithms, and other engineering disciplines. The candidate must have strong organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work well in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead development and maintenance of product specifications, requirements documents, risk and hazards analysis, design FMEA, usability, and other technical documentation
  • Lead system integration, validation and perform system level testing, including development of test plans and coordination of test resources
  • Lead engineering change activities including but not limited to work instruction release, revisions, process deviations, and test requirement changes
  • Work independently and with cross-functional teams to design new instrumentation solutions and improvements to existing designs
  • Work independently and with cross-functional teams to build and test prototypes
  • Analyze data and effectively communicate results and conclusions in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Continuous improvement and adoption of new engineering methods and techniques


Minimal Qualifications: 

  • BS in Engineering or a related field
  • A minimum of 3 years product or instrumentation development experience in a multi-disciplinary development team
  • Strong attention to detail and quality engineering process
  • Proficient with standard lab test equipment
  • Proficient in standard statistical methods of experimental evaluation and able to process statistical results using software tools (e.g., R, JMP, Origin, SAS)


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • MS / PhD in engineering
  • Good understanding and hands-on experience in laser optics
  • Experience in electrical, mechanical, optical, or fluidic design and familiarity with Solidworks, Zemax, COMSOL or other modeling tools
  • Experience with signal chain development and testing
  • Experience programming for R&D testing (e.g., Python, Matlab)
  • Experience with fluidics and microfluidics
  • Excellent people and leadership skills
  • Flow cytometry or other life science equipment experience
