Role Overview

The Field and Laboratory Technician has shared responsibilities with both the field and lab teams. In the field, this position is largely focused on filtering follicular fluid, classifying oocyte health, and promoting successful embryo development via maturation media and incubation. Field responsibilities include travel to various customer facilities in the Midwest and Eastern US. In the lab, this position will be responsible for contributing to various daily activities for all IVF lab procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In the field:

  • Prepare personal workspace, personal stereo-microscope and incubator to ensure accurate assessment and safe transportation of oocytes.
  • Filter follicular fluid and rinse oocytes with washing media protocols.
  • Classify oocytes and document quantity per classification protocols, discard non-viable structures using pipette.
  • Manage time to ensure timely processing of received oocytes.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation of data while processing aspirated oocytes for each donor.
  • Prepare transportation tubes with maturation media, seal and house in incubator.
  • Actively participate in testing and process improvement initiatives.
  • Seek continuous improvement to further perfect skills and decision-making required during evaluation and categorization of oocyte health.
  • Follow established safety regulations.
  • Responsible for personal transportation to most worksites often in rural areas.

In the lab:

  • Scope of responsibilities contingent on previous professional experiences and production demand.
  • Prepare workspace to ensure accurate assessment and safe manipulation of the oocytes, semen and embryos.
  • Ensure all materials and supplies are present for routine IVF procedures based on production forecasts.
  • Assist in the calibration and maintenance of key lab equipment such as incubators, autoclave, lab hoods, centrifuge, nitrogen tanks and microscopes.
  • Assist in preparation of materials (IVF and IVC culture dishes, oocyte maturation tubes, and embryo media).
  • Assist the loading of the embryos for embryo transfer.
  • Record all necessary data related to IVF process and evaluate data for performance tracking measures.
  • Follow established safety regulations.


Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma required. Biology, Animal Science or related degree preferred.
  • Previous course work within laboratory environment preferred.
  • Previous experiences using pipettes and microscope preferred.
  • Previous experience working in farm environment beneficial.
  • Microsoft Office (Excel) experience preferred.


  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, with several overnight trips per month.
  • Team-centric, detail-orientated, and highly organized.
  • Ability to work varied shifts including an occasional Saturday and holidays depending on production demand.
  • Exceptional follow-through consistently demonstrating ability to organize and prioritize work for timely completion.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to speak English required, bilingual (English/Portuguese) beneficial.


  • Use and/or application of basic science principles, theories and concepts.
  • Knowledge of industry practices and standards.

Problem Solving:

  • Solves routine problems of limited scope and complexity by following established policies and SOPS referring to supervisors or senior team members for guidance.


  • Ability to work under close supervision from Field Team Lead and Senior Embryologist
  • Work is routinely reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall adequacy and accuracy.


  • Contributions are related to both process- and task-related activities.
  • Errors in judgment or failure to achieve results would result in the expenditure of moderate amounts of company resources; however, they can be easily and quickly detected within the immediate review of work.


  • Communicates primarily with Field Team Lead, OPU Supervisors, and Senior Embryologist with support from other senior team members.
